DVA - The Driver and Vehicle Agency in N.Ireland
The DVA is the agency located in Coleraine, Northern Ireland which deals with all licensing etc of vehicles and drivers in the province. It mirrors the DVLA at Swansea although it operates independently.
Northern Ireland has it's own registration number system and all number plates in the province will have either a letter I or letter Z to indicate this.
The DVA also handles cherished number transfers and assignments but when a mainland vehicle or DVLA certificated registration is involved they will liase with a local DVLA office ( usually Gosforth Office, Newcastle upon Tyne ).
In these cases Gosforth would handle documentation for the vehicle or registration controlled by Swansea while Coleraine would handle the documents etc for the N.Ireland vehicle or registration.
In a similar way to the DVLA, DVA offers attractive car registrations for sale either by auction or via a third party website, but unlike Swansea they also operate a sealed bid or tender means of buying short, attractive N.Ireland numbers.
These are supplied on a V750NI certificate of entitlement which can only be used to assign the number to a vehicle registered with the DVA. When buying such a number to go on a mainland registered car, a "sponge" vehicle ( usually a moped ) will be required to assign the registration to before using a V317NI to transfer it to the mainland car.
