DVLA - The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
The DVLA is the government agency which administers all things pertaining to vehicle and driver licensing in the mainland United Kingdom. Based in Swansea it covers England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland where they have their own agency called the DVA based in Coleraine.
There are also local offices spead around the country to serve those customers who cannot use the DVLA's services by other means. The most convenient way to deal with the agency is more and more via the internet although many functions can be accessed by telephone.
Apart from the familiar services of vehicle registration, road fund tax, driving licence issuance, the DVLA also controls all transfers of cherished number plates. These are carried out by the local offices although Swansea will control the overall transfer and issues the new V5C registration documents.
The locals DVLA offices offer an over the counter service for assigning private number plates held on either a retention certificate or certificate of entitlement. Vehicle to vehicle transfers take longer as either or both vehicles may require an inspection.
Applications to retain cherished number plates should also be given to a local office, but renewing V750 or V778 certificates should be done by post to DVLA Swansea.
The DVLA also sell private number plates via their website and also through cherished number dealers, these registrations are commonly known as DVLA Number Plates
