Form V778/1, for use in the transfer of Personalised Car Registrations and Number Plates
Form V778/1 was the form provided by the DVLA when applying to retain a registration number, it has now been replaced by the new version of the form V317.
The biggest change with the new V317 is the ability to specify a person who is not the registered keeper of the vehicle donating its registration number to become the Grantee.
The old V778/1 only allowed for a nominee whose rights are restricted to having that number assigned to his/her vehicle, the DVLA does not correspond with the Grantee in the same way as the Grantee.
Note that once the number is on retention it is still not possible to change the Grantee, it must be done at the time of retaining the number plates concerned.
This is especially useful when selling personalised number plates which are still on your car as you can make the buyer the Grantee who assumes full rights to that cherished number.
