V948 - Number Plates Authorisation Certificate
V948 is a certificate which authorises the purchase of Number Plates for a vehicle. Since legislation was passed governing the purchase and supply of car number plates it became mandatory to supply proof of entitlement to the registration number depicted on the number plates.
Normally this would be the V5C registration document for the vehicle concerned, but sometimes when dealing with personalised registrations the V750 or V778 would be used as proof.
However when an assignment or transfer of private number plates has taken place there will be no suitable V5C as it will require replacing with a new one, also the V750 or V778 will not be available as it will be kept by the DVLA office.
The V948 gets around this problem as once issued by the DVLA local office it can be taken with proof of I.D. to a number plates supplier who will then make up the plates you require.
