Ageless Car Registrations.
The term "Ageless Registrations" refers to car registrations which have no year identifier in their combination of letters and numbers.
They are also frequently referred to as Cover Plates
Since 1963, British registration numbers have had a number or letter in a specific location in the sequence of digits which indicates the year ( or 6 months ) when the car was first registered.
The first system to use this was the suffix system wherein the last letter of the registration gave the year of the vehicle. Then came the prefix system where the first letter gave the age. Now it is digit number 3 and 4 which gives the age.
Ageless registrations have no such identifiers in them and are usually the most sought after and prestigious of personal number plates.
They are very popular with owners of cars who, unable or unwilling to buy a new model, have cared for a slightly later model which could pass for new if the number plates were removed.
Unfortunately it is illegal to have a car on the public road without number plates fitted so the next best thing is to change the registration number on the plates to something which does not give away the year of the car.
The cheapest way to do this is to buy a registration number from Northern Ireland, these are cheap and have no year letter or number. They do however all have a letter I or Z in them so they are easily identified as being Irish.
More effective is a 3 X 3 number which has 3 letters and 3 numbers, or 3 numbers then 3 letters. The letters will usually ones which are unlikely to be anyones initials such as U or Y or X.
They cost a few hundred pounds but considering the price of new cars can save a lot of money when buying or keeping a pristine vehicle which is a few years old.
Once bought, they can be transferred each time the car is changed for just 80 pounds, so over the years can save a considerable amount of money.
An added bonus of an ageless 3 X 3 registration number is they only have 6 digits. For many years normal issue DVLA registrations have hd 7 digits and the latest system of two letter, two numbers, three letters looks complicated on the number plates. A 3 X 3 personalised number plates looks diferent from the usual registration plates seen on most cars, so stands out from the crowd.
