Assignment of Cherished or Private Number Plates onto vehicles.
Assignment is the process of transferring a Cherished Number or Private Number Plates from a certificate, either V750 or V778 onto a vehicle.
A V778 is a retention certificate which holds the entitlement to a personalised registration number which has been removed from a vehicle for later use, a V750 holds a personalised DVLA number plate whose registration number has never been issued to a car , motorcycle or commercial vehicle.
The registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle which is registered in the same name as either the Grantee,Purchaser or Nominee detailed on the certificate.
V750 certificates have a purchaser's name and optionally a nominee while a V778 has a Grantee's name and optionally a nominee name.It is worth noting that at the time of retaining a number ( V778 ) or buying a number it is free to add a nominee free of charge and alsways worht doing as it costs 25 pounds to do this later on .
If the registered keeper of the car does not appear on the certificate as Grantee, Purchase or Nominee it is possible to add the registered keeper as nominee at the same time as assigning the registration to the car.
This did not used to be the case, the V750 or V778 had to be sent to DVLA Swansea for nominee changes, this added a delay of 2 to 3 weeks when assigning a registration number to a vehicle.
Assignments can only be carried out at DVLA offices, not Post Offices. In addition to the V750 or V778 you will need the V5C for the vehicle receiving the Cherished Numbers along with the M.O.T. and tax disc.
Unless there is a nominee change there should be nothing to pay as the transfer fee was paid at the time of retention/purchase.
