Assignment fee for putting Private Number Plates onto a vehicle.

An assignment fee is the charge the DVLA makes to put private number plates onto a vehicle when the registration number is held on a certificate of entitlement or a retention certificate.
This covers the costs for them to issue new vehicle documents such as V5C registration document. M.O.T. certificate and tax disc bearing the registration number held on the V750 or V778 certificate.
This fee is currently 80 pounds and is pre-paid when the number is bought ( in the case of V750 certificates ) or 105 pounds when the V317 is submitted to retain a registration number already on a vehicle.
In both cases the "Grantee" ( V778 ) or "Purchaser ( V750 ) can appoint a nominee at the time free of charge. If however the number is to be assigned to a vehicle registered in neither the nominee's name or the purchaser or grantee, there will be a further charge of 25 pounds to change nominee.
In the case of V750 ( NI ) certificates the assignment fee is only for use in assigning the registration number to a vehicle registered in N.Ireland. There will then be a further transfer fee of 80 pounds if the registration is destined for a car registered with DVLA on the mainland.
Similarly if a registration is held on a V750 or V778 issued by DVLA Swansea there will be a further 80 pound transfer fee if the registration is destined for a vehicle registered with the DVA in Northern Ireland.
This is because Northern Ireland has it's own Driver and Vehicle Agency ( DVA ) which operates independently of the mainland Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency ( DVLA ).
The transfer fee between two cars or similar in N.Ireland, the mainland or between the two is currently 80 pounds.
There is at present no retention scheme available in N.Ireland, but there are V750 certificates of entitlement for private number plates sold by the DVA.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above , please contact us by email or telephone.
