Definitions and interpretations of the term Cherished Number Plates
The term "Cherished Number Plates" is one of the older terms which was used along with Cherished Numbers and Cherished Marks
It used to refer to a registration which was removed from a vehicle and transferred to another for the purpose of personalisation in a time when previously unissued numbers were not made available for purchase by the DVLA.
These days it is often used to differentiate between the two types of personalised car registrations, private number plates for previously unissued, cherished number plates for previously issued numbers.
The significance of the word "Cherished" in the term signifies that the registration number is old and care has been taken to keep it in circulation even though the car , motorcycle or truck which first bore the number has long ceased to exist.
In contrast the term private number plates is more often used to refer to a disposable, low cost car registration whic would probably be left on the car when it is traded in.
The term cherished conveys a subtle inference of taste in a time when many private number plates are quite naff and are referred to as chav plates. Most ageless registrations are referred to as cherished while a new style 11 number which attempts to spell something using text speak would be a private reg.
