Definitions and interpretations of the term Cherished Numbers

The term "Cherished Numbers" is the original term used to refer to a registration number bought for it's attractiveness or suitability to identify the owner or vehicle.
Businesses that sprang up to facilitate transfers of cherished registration numbers between vehicles were called cherished number dealers and this term has remained popular while names for the actual registration numbers transferred have changed somewhat.
The term harks back to an age when transfers of registrations was both time consuming and difficult, there were no retention certificates, certificates of entitlement or previously unissued numbers.
It is believed that, in the early days transfers were only allowed between cars which had the same owner, presumably so you could keep your registration number for life.
Buying such car registrations was best left to the experts who knew how to deal with any problems thrown at them by the local vehicle registration offices when the transfer was submitted.
It is perhaps a shame that such an elegant phrase has declined in popularity, to be replaced by phrases such as private reg or private plates. It conjures up a short and attractive registration number whereas more modern phrases refer to a cheaper and more disposable item.
Whilst the dealers are referred as cherished number dealers the term will survive, but as the market is flooded with the millions of new style registrations which are released each year, common usage is bound to decline.
