Cherished Transfers, the transfer of Cherished Registrations and Number Plates

The term "Cherished Transfers" refers to the transfer of a registration number usually between two vehicles, it can also refer to the transfer of a registration from or onto a retention certificate ( V778 ) .
Normally but not exclusively carried out by a cherished number dealer involving the use of form V317 for vehicle to vehicle transfers or numbers going onto retention.
The same form is now used for both types of transfer, previously there was a form V778/1 which was used exclusively for an application to retain a cherished number.
The New V317 can be used for both car to car transfers and transfers from car to V778 retention certificate.
A further improvement made with the new V317 is the ability for the applicant to make the grantee a third party a the time of application, previously only the applicant could be the grantee.
This is great improvement over the old system and makes buying cherished numbers which are still on cars easy and safe. The ability to add a nominee at the time of application remains the same.
The current fee payable to the DVLA for this service is 80 pounds for a car to car transfer or 105 pounds for a registration going onto retention. Numbers being transferred from retention form V778 will have had the transfer fee pre-paid at the time of retention although there could be a fee of 25 pounds payable if the nominee on the V778 is not the same as that one the V5C registration document.
Cherished Transfer is used to differentiate from the process of transferring a registration number from a certificate of entitlement V750 onto a vehicle, this is normally referred to assignment of the number.
There used to be restrictions governing the transfer of number plates between motorcycles and cars, these have now been relaxed although the requirement for both vehicles to be taxed and tested remains. However there can be some exceptions made for those vehicles which are declared SORN.
