Continuous taxation and the implications on private number plates and their transfer

Continuous taxation has been with us for some time now and most people will be aware for it's need. Basically it is no longer permissable to allow a car's tax to expire and keep the vehicle off the public road.
If it is intended to "lay up" the vehicle it is a legal requiement to declare " Statutory Off Road Notification" so that the DVLA know about it. It is easily done when your tax reminder arrives and can be done online, over the phone or at a post office.
Failure to do so will result in a fixed penalty of 100 pounds arriving through the post without warning.
Whilst it is understandable that the DVLA wish to make sure that all drivers are paying their share of road tax , there is a much better reason for this new rule. It is a requirement fo a tax application that the vehicle is insured and a certificate to prove this will be needed when applying.
This new rule should reduce the number of uninsured drivers which is the real problem we face in the U.K.
SORN does however need to be considered when the car has private number plates. If you SORN a car it may still be possible to transfer the registration off within the first year, after this it will probably be neccesary to re-MOT and tax the car to enable at transer.
If you are applying for SORN and you think it unlikely the car will come back onto the road , it would be better to retain the registration number before the tax runs out and keep the personalised number plates on a V778 retention certificate.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above , please contact us by email or telephone.

Just a note to thank you all for your help in purchasing a number plate for my husband for christmas. You made the whole process seem so easy and stress free, as I had had a bad experience with another number plate company a few years ago. You were efficient, professional and kept me informed.
