Current Style Number Plates.
The term "Current Style Number Plates" refers to car registrations that were introduced in September 2001 to replace the previous prefix system which had ran out of possible combinations.
Every New Style registration has 7 digits, unlike all previous numbering systems and the format is two letters, two number, space then three letters
The first two letters give the area of the country where the vehicle was first registered, the next two numbers give the 6 month period during which registration took place and the last three letters are random
It is interesting to note that the letter Z was made available for the first time in mainland registration numbers. It was previously reserved for N.Ireland. It is only available in the last block of three letters.
The series commenced with 51 in September 2001 and was followed by 02 in March 2002 and so on. The combinations 00 and 01 were not used and presumably will be made available to purchase at some later date.
The first letter gives you the area of the country the car was first registered :-
A = Anglia
B = Birmingham
C = Cymru
D = Deeside
E = Essex
F = E Midlands
G = Kent/Sussex
H = Hampshire/Dorset
K = Luton/Northants
L = London
M = Manchester/Liverpool
N = North
O = Oxford
P = Preston
R = Reading
S = Scotland
V = Severn Valley
W = West
Y = Yorkshire
The second and third digit give the 6 month period in which the vehicle was first registered :-
51 = Sep 2001
02 = March 2002
52 = Sep 2002
03 = March 2003
53 = Sep 2003
04 = March 2004
54 = Sep 2004
05 = March 2005
55 = Sep 2005
06 = March 2006
56 = Sep 2006
07 = March 2007
57 = Sep 2007
08 = March 2008
58 = Sep 2008
09 = March 2009
59 = Sep 2009
10 = March 2010
60 = Sep 2010
11 = March 2011
61 = Sep 2011
