Euro Number Plates or Europlates
Euro Number Plates or Europlates as they are sometimes know are acrylic plates which have a blue border at the left hand side which has printed on it The European symbol of 12 stars arranged in a circle.
Additionally, below the Ring of Stars the country code is printed, in our case the letters GB.
These plates are useful when fitted to vehicles which travel on the continent as it means there is no need for a GB sticker on the rear of the car.
They should not confused with number plates which have a country flag at their left hand side. In the U.K. it is legal to have the following flags :-
St Georges Cross
Saltire
Red Dragon
With the optional letter of ENG, SCO, CYM respectively,
These flags however are not legal in the rest of Europe as a replacement to proper Europlates and cars which have these flags will also need a GB sticker on their rear.
The only legal Europlates are the ones with the European stars with GB below on a blue vertical band at the left hand edge of the plates.
One downside to using Europlates when the registration displays personalised current style number plates is that all current style numbers have seven digits and the inclusion of the blue border which is compulsory on Europlates makes the plate look very cramped with hardly any margin to the left and right of the registration characters.
