Frequently asked questions regarding the transfer of private number plates and number plates in general
Frequently Asked Questions about number plate transfers
Q. I am thinking of selling my car , what should I do about my private number plates?
A. We recommend putting car registrations onto retention before you sell the car. Although it costs £25 more than a vehicle to vehicle transfer it is more convenient.
Q. What are the main rules allowing number plates to be transferrable?
A. The vehicle bearing the number needs tax and test ( although if the tax EXPIRED less than 6 months ago it may still be o.k.) The numbers ( chassis , engine etc ) on the V5 must agree with those on the vehicle and there could be an inspection to prove this. There should not be "Non Transferrable Number"adjacent to the registration number on the vehicle V5.
Q. The car has been scrapped but I kept the V5, can I sell the number plates?
A. No, you need the vehicle as well.
Q. My private number plate is on a V778 but I am only listed as nominee and it needs to be renewed, what do I do?
A.There are two names on a V778,1st is the "Grantee", The grantee is allowed to nominate one other person to be able to assign the registration number to a car in his/her name. This person becomes the "nominee". However it is the "Grantee" that controls the V778 .He or she is the only person that can renew or change nominee on the V778. You will need to contact the grantee to see if they are willing to do this for you..
Q I have a "Certificate of Entitlement" ( V750) which is due to expire, however I am only the " Nominee" how do I renew the V750.
A. See answer above but "Grantee" becomes " Purchaser"
Q. I am in N.Ireland and have a personalised number plate on a V750 (or V778), how do I get the number onto my car?
A. A V750 or V778 issued by Swansea can only be used to assign a number to a vehicle registered on the mainland not N.Ireland. It is still possible to transfer the number onto your car but extra fees and charges are involved. Please call for further information.
Q. I already have private number plates and want to know the value.
A. If you need a valuation you can get one from the CNDA, this will be an independent valuation.
Q. I do not want any trade names printed on the bottom of my number plates, can I request this?
A. No, it is legal requirement that the supplier of the number plates prints his name and postcode on every plate made, however Northumbria Numbers uses the smallest acceptable font so that it can still be read by M.O.T. testers or the police but is not visible when viewed from a reasonable distance.
Q. I want customised number plates with my football team at the left hand side or in the background, can I have this?
A. No, the only additional thing you can have is the blue border at the left hand edge of the number plates which can have the Euro symbol with GB below which negates the need for a GB sticker on your boot when travelling abroad.
Q. Can I have a flag on the left hand border?
A. Yes, you can have the Union Jack , St Georges Cross, Saltire or Welsh Dragon, however if you travel elsewhere in the E.U. you will need a GB sticker on the boot of the car, unlike Euro number plates above.
