Grantee - holder to the rights of Cherished Number Plates held on retention.
The Grantee named on a V778 retention document is the holder to the rights to the cherished number plates given on the V778. He or she is the only person that the DVLA will converse with regarding that registration number.
It used to be that the applicant who retained the registration, who also had to be the registered keep of the car or motorcycle concerned became the Grantee, however the new application form V317 allows a third party to becaome the Grantee at the time the number is retained.
Private number plates that are already on retention have their Grantee fixed and unchangeable, only the nominee can be amended after the registration has been put onto a V778.
The new V317 is especially useful for someone selling cherished number plates which are on his or her car, the seller can simply put it on retention with the buyer as Grantee,the V778 , when it is printed up will be sent to the buyer.
Only the Grantee has the rights to renew the V778, add or change Nominee or surrender the V778 for refund of the transfer fee.
If a registration is bought and it is already on a V778 it is not possible to change the Grantee. The purchaser can get the Grantee to add him or herself as nominee. The buyer then has until the expiry date printed on the V778 to assign the registration to a vehicle registered in his or her name.
It is vital that the assignment of the cherished number plates is carried out before this expiry date as the DVLA will not send a reminder to the nominee, it goes to the Grantee. Also the nominee will have problems renewing the V778 for another year and will need the help of the Grantee to do so.
