Definitions and interpretations of the term Number Plates

The term "Number Plates" should really refer to the physical plates on the vehicles depicting the registration number assigned to that vehicle.
Current number plates are made from a clear acrylic sheet which is glued to a relective background onto which the characters and numbers contain in the car registration are printed
There is a lot of legislation governing the display, manufacture and purchase of number plates including British Standards to govern the appearance of the registration number on the plate, the reflectivity and impact resistance
The latest legislation introduced is intended to make it more difficult for criminals to buy false number plates for use in future crimes, proof of I.D. and proof of entitlement to the registration is now required when making a purchase.
Number plates which do not comply with the laws governing character font, dimensions and spacing along with various other rules will result in an M.O.T. failure.
Mis-represented registration numbers on vehicle number plates can trigger a " hit " on ANPRS cameras resulting in the vehicle being stopped by the police, penalties can be as high as a 1000 pound fine.
Suppliers of number plates must be registered with DVLA and their details are held on the RNPS database. Suppliers must also print their name and postcode on the bottom of every number plate supplied.
Vehicles first registered before Jan 1st 1973 are allowed to display the old style metal number plates with silver or white digits on a black background.
Number Plates is the generic term often used to describe registration plates, licence plates, car registrations and registration numbers and often is used to describe personalised, private, cherished and personal number plates.
