Auctions of Number Plates
One method of bringing personalised number plates to the market is by auction. Traditionally this has been the preserve of the DVLA's Sale of Marks unit who have, for many years held successful auctions several times a year for previously un-issued registration numbers at venues all around the country.
These have proven to be very popular and since the advent of the internet it is now not even neccesary to travel to the auction in order to bid, it can all be done online.
The agency has also been experimenting with fixed bid online only auctions for less valuable DVLA number plates and have been honing the procedure to be the best possible.
One very effective variation to normal auction procedures has been the introduction of sliding end times. Under this scheme all the private number plates included in the auction have a notional end date and time, however those numbers which attract bidding can have their auction run extended dynamically.
This prevents the use of auction sniping software which automates bidding up to a maximum amount in the last few seconds of the sale. It also deters those prospective bidders who lurk around and start bidding just before the scheduled end time.
Owners of private number plates who wish to sell their number in an auction cannot use these above auctions. Some dealers can help with this on their own website and their are dedicated cherished numbers auction websites.
There is also the usual extremely popular auction website which although not as specialised, does have a dedicated section for cherished numbers.
This auction site has of late become more and more popular with amateur and professional dealers who make multiple listings at once. It can now be difficult for a lone seller to get their personalised registration number noticed in a sea of trade adverts.
