Number Plate fixings, options for attaching number plates to car
The traditional methods for fixing number plates to cars or other vehicles has been either self tapping screws or coloured plastic nuts and bolts. These methods are fine and perhaps the most secure but they have drawbacks, especially when they are fixing private number plates to cars.
Screws are unsightly on a high qaulity number plate, this can be masked by a little paint on the screwhead, slecting black if the screw lands on a digit or white or yellow if it lands on the background.
The coloured screws are better , as long as the holes are in the background colour and not one of the characters which are black. Also it is seldom easy to fix nuts behind the bumper.
Over recent years , with the advent of plastic bumpers, number plates have been fixed by means of double sided tape. This method gets around the drilling of the plates and screws and bolts but is not quite so secure.
The secret is to make sure the surface the plates are to be stuck to is incredibly clean. Even so the plates can come off in such circumstances as a bird strike or hitting a deep puddle.
One method which circumvents all the problems is to use a number plate frame. These are seldom seen but are worth consideration. These work by being fixed with screws or bolts to the car, then the number plates themselves drop into the frame and are locked in by clips.
None of the existing methods addresses the problem of plate theft, wherein a theif removes your number plates and uses them to disguise another car while committing a crime, this can be fuel theft, congestion charging or similar where CCTV is in use.
There are currerntly two ways to help with this problem, one way security screws, once fitted they are very difficult to unscrew, or self destructing plates which are stuck on and seperate into their component parts when ripped off.
