Definitions and interpretations of the term Personalised Number Plates

The term "Personalised Number Plates" is very similar to the term private number plates in that it primarily signifies that the registration number has been bought and is personal to the vehicle owner.
The term is used to differentiate the registration number from the run of the mill number assigned to the vehicle during the normal process although the personalised registration displayed could well have been removed from another vehicle which acquired that number by the usual means of registration.
This anomally came about as the whole business of personalised number plates or cherished numbers evolved, initially registration numbers were not held back by the DVLA for future sale and very often a vehicle could be assigned a registration number which later could be sold.
These days registration numbers which could be saleable are not normally issued during the day to day registration process but are held back for future sale.
The significant word contained in the term is "Personalised" which infers it is wholly significant to the owner of the vehicles.
Perhaps the best examples of these are the personalised registration numbers which mean something to the owner but nothing to everyone else. The current style numbers are a good example of this, very often the first two letters will be the initials of one partner while the last three letters will be those of the other party.
So the number plates bought are "personalised" to the couple who own the car but to everyone else the registration number looks just like a normal issue number.
