Definitions and interpretations of the term Private Number Plates
The term "Private Number Plates" is a fairly recent term used to describe a registration number which is not the usual run of the mill number which was issued to the car upon first registration.
Although it could be a number that has been previously issued to a vehicle during the normal registration process carried out by the DVLA these types of registrations are usually referred to as cherished numbers or cherished number plates to signify that they are more exclusive due their scarcity and more difficult transfer.
More often a private number plate will be one that has never been issued to a car, truck or motorcycle and has been made available for purchase either by auction, telesales or similar means.
The most significant word is "private" which implies the number has been bought, and is not a normal issue registration number for that vehicle. It also tends to differentiate them from personalised number plates and cherished number plates, both of which have subtley different meanings.
The terms private plates, private registrations are shortened versions of the term private number plates.
Northumbria Numbers have been supplying U.K. motorists with a friendly and efficient service supplying and transferring private number plates since 1995.
