The Register of Number Plate Suppliers
The DVLA has for some time operated a register of number plate suppliers in the U.K. This became neccesary when rules governing the supply of vehicle number plates were tightened up in an attempt to cut down the use of false plates and also the fashion of illegible characters etc.
It was of no use to bring in new laws covering the security checks needed to stop criminals buying false plates to carry out crimes and also lay down specifications governing the dimensions, spacing fonts and backgrounds without having the means of enforcement.
It was obvious that in order for the new ANPRS equipment to be fully efficient all registration numbers must be valid for that particular vehicle and readable by the software behind the recognition system.
To this end a database of suppliers was compiled by inviting anyone who intends to make up number plates to register. It also became a legal requirement that suppliers print their name and postcode on every plates they make.
In this way the police can trace back any plates they are not happy with to the supplier who could face a fine and loss of licence.
In return the DVLA holds a searchable database for motorists to locate their nearest number plate supplier in order to purchase same.
