Form V778, retention certificate for Personalised Car Registrations and Private Number Plates
Form V778 is the certificate sent to the Grantee upon succesful processing of form V317, application to retain a cherished registration number.
Note that it is the Grantee who receives full rights to the registration, who may not be the registered keeper of the car or motorcyle which donated the registration number.
There could also be a Nominee named on the V778 although he/she has just the right of assignment and nothing else
The transfer fee of 105 pounds will have been paid at the time of application so, if the registration number is to go on a car or motorcyle registered in the Grantee's or Nominee's name ther is not further fee to pay at the time of assignment.
The Nominee can be changed at any time for a fee of 25 pounds. Only the Grantee can apply to change Nominee or renew the V778.
It is now possible to change Nominee at the same time as assigning the number to a vehicle.Previously the V778 had to be sent to DVLA Swansea to be reprinted with the new nominee's name before the registration number could be assigned.
This is a great improvement as it could typically take a couple of weeks to change a nominee.
The only downside to keeping personalised number plates on retention certificates is the 25 pound renewal fee which is due every year the registration is not assigned to a car.
