Stolen cars and private number plates
There are established rules regarding private number plates and stolen cars. The main rule is that the car must be missing, not recovered before the registered keeper can apply to get their personalised registration number,
They must elect to have the registration assigned to another car registered in the same name as the stolen one,it is not possible to put the number on retention straight away.
It is vital that the owner of the stolen car informs the DVLA as soon as it becomes apparent that the car is not going to be found quickly, proof that the police have been informed will be required.
It should also be made clear to the insurance company that any settlement does not include the value of the cherished number plates, a letter to this effect could also be required by DVLA.
The above emphasises the need to inform the insurance company at the time the registration number is assigned to the car concerned. Apart from the legal requirement to keep the Motor Insurance Database up to date,to avoid a fixed peanalty being issued to the car owner, the insurance company needs to know the new registration number in order to keep future documentation including cover notes and certificates of insurance accurate.
