Procedures for transferring Private Number Plates
Transferring Private Number Plates
Transferring Private Number Plates can be tricky, however if you are buying from us this should not concern you as we take care of the process as part of our service.
Many people are still interested in what is involved even though they don't have to carry it out. Here are some of the major points :-.
Transfers off a vehicle fall into two main categories, ie "vehicle to vehicle" or transfer to a "certificate". Both types of transfer are expedited using form V317 along with vehicle documents for the "donor" ( and "recipient" in the case of vehicle to vehicle transfers ), the transfer fee is £80 for vehicle to vehicle and £105 for retention.
Transfers from certificates onto vehicles come in two "flavours", firstly the V750 is a pink certificate and holds a registration number which has never been on a vehicle , the V778 is a retention certificate , coloured green and is for a number plate which has already been issued to a vehicle, then transferred onto this retention certificate. In both cases the transfer fee has been pre-paid. Transfer fees are normally £105. Only the recipient vehicle's documents are required as there is no donor.
Vehicles receiving or donating private number plates should have a current M.O.T ( if the vehicle is over 3 years old) and must have a current road tax disc ( If the tax disc EXPIRED less than 6 months ago a transfer may still be possible).
Vehicles not subject to the M.O.T. test are excluded from cherished transfers so tractors etc are no good.
The DVLNI have their own V750 certificates ( there is currently no retention scheme in N.Ireland) however Private Number Plates held on a V750NI can only be assigned to a N.Ireland vehicle. It is possible to transfer them onto a mainland registered vehicle but extra fees and costs are involved.
